Best time in my life, so far, still, probably is after I worked a job at a bland, major corporation where I got to know the firm I work with…. and then, when I shifted from that job to the next with them.

Greatest group to work with my whole life.

The realization of my new career with this firm was so strong, and made me feel so alive. Nowadays, that glory and excitement is normalized.

“Sometime around 2.10 a.m. as the Titanic began settling more quickly into the icy North Altantic, the sounds of ragtime, familiar dance tunes and popular waltzes that had floated reassuringly across her decks suddenly stopped as Bandmaster Wallace Hartley tapped his bow against his violin. Hartley and his musicians, all wearing their lifebelts now, were standing back at the base of the second funnel, on the roof of the First Class Lounge, where they had been playing for the better part of an hour. There were a few moments of silence, then the solemn strains of the hymn “Nearer My God to Thee” began drifting across the water. It was with a perhaps unintended irony that Hartley chose a hymn that pleaded for the mercy of the Almighty, as the ultimate material conceit of the Edwardian Age, the ship that “God Himself couldn’t sink,” foundered beneath his feet. As the band played, the slant of the deck grew steeper, while from within the hull came a rapidly increasing number of thuds, bangs and crashes as interior furnishings broke loose, walls and partitions collapsed–the Titanic was only moments from breaking apart.”

I have been giving this post a lot of thought and other than giving birth to my sons being a best time in life, I think the best time is when you quit working at the prison.

You began making guitars in the garage. Then, I suggested that we make seagulls together, and that was a very fun time in my life. I loved working in the garage with you when we were building the seagulls. You built them and I painted them. You wanted each one to be different, but I stuck to the color pattern of the beloved Johnathan Livingston Seagull, —– because it was the most beloved of people who admire seagulls. These seagulls would be sold to people who love the look of a flying seagull.

I loved splitting my time between house cleaning, cooking us meals, painting seagulls, and enjoying time with you. I was very happy in those days.

Where we failed was in selling of the guitars and seagulls, neither of us is good at selling.

Our “target” consumer would be people who love the look of a flying seagull, and those who remember Johnathan Livingston Seagull. Beach town folks would not want one, because seagulls are pests where they live. For those in love with the poetry of the lines of a flying seagull, there was nothing more graceful than the flight movement of the seagulls you built. I love ours that is hung on our porch and gently flaps it’s wings with the slightest breeze.

Those were happy days. I loved working with you. I loved that you were no longer working at the prison, but you were in the garage, where it was safe —— and I had a first aid medical kit handy in case of accidents. You were energized and motivated in those days. With each new guitar and seagull, we displayed them and tested them with deep adoration for your skills as a craftsman.
