• Tribalism. We evolved to use superficial differences in action and appearance to determine who “us” is and who “them” is. These differences can be as great as ideology, or as minor as a sports team. It was useful because your tribe used to be your extended family. They shared a portion of your genetic make-up with you, so preserving each other was very useful for the survival of the group and, therefore, of said genes. This little Darwinian mechanism causes all kinds of havoc these days: wars between nations, indifference to poverty in “them” groups, genocides, rape, thievery  etc.. Imagine how hard these things would be for most people to do to their family/tribe. Seeing so many as outsiders makes these actions possible much more frequently.
